Welcome to Sam Payne Ceramics
Hand-built creatures, full of character and calm.
Some with Humour some with Depth.
Some to make you Smile, some just to Reflect.
It's about understanding humanity through another living creature, without having to navigate the complications of human relationships themselves.
I find human relationships complicated. People misunderstand each other, disappoint each other, reject each other and sometimes hurt each other, often without intending to.
I have an awful lot of empathy and emotional understanding, but that doesn't necessarily mean I'm very good at expressing the tender, affectionate bits of myself to people.
With the creatures, I can do that. I can give them all that attention and affection. I can explore bodies, expressions, posture, personality and emotion. There's no awkwardness, no worrying about how it's being received.
And somewhere in all that, I think I'm learning things about people, and probably about myself as well.
In clay I don’t just shape a thing,
I catch the moods the storms might bring.
A badger’s hush, a fox’s dance,
a squirrel’s fleeting, moonlit glance. Not objects, no — but pieces, small,
of whispers, storms, and nights that call.
My hands know stories, secret, free…
long before my head knows me.Tension • Weight • Consciousness • Awkwardness • Atmosphere • Presence
A conscious creature standing in a very large world.
